Technology Transfer opportunities from developed countries are
significant openings for India to move into translational medicine
much more quickly and produces products for the global market.
This model will also help India develop its R & D infrastructure
with the revenue that might come from the sale of the products. In
the opinion of the Institute, there are numerous emerging
opportunities for ‘licensing-in’ potential technologies from
developed countries.
The Institute believes that patenting and licensing biomedical
technologies facilitate and bring in Venture Capital (VP)-based
domestic and Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) by commercial
partners for further research and commercial development of new
products that can penetrate global markets creating wealth for the
country. This model has led to many successful products. With the
explosion of start-up companies, ‘In–Licensing’ of early stage and
matured biomedical technologies will place India in a highly
competitive advantage in the global market while it builds its own
IP portfolios. India’s success depends on the effective
utilization of this opportunity in these highly dynamic and
growing biomedical portfolios. Commercial positioning using an ‘In
Licensing’ route should be critically viewed as an opportunity.
However, there are many important legal, business, and scientific
considerations that need be tackled carefully in developing
successful licensing agreements. |
